How To Open Gpx On Iphone

  1. OK hoping to keep this simple as can be.
Heading to a dual-sport rally in a few weeks and we will be provided with the GPX file for the ride.
I have a iPhone SE running 14.3 and a nice solid Ram-Mount to hold it where I can easily see it.
What would be a good "app" to use to work with the GPX file?
Just as simple as, "I have that phone and I use ______ with good results." would be most appreciated.
    Thanks,
    John

ohgood Just givver tha berries !!!

    Gaia
    Osmand
    guru
motion x (if you can find it)
  3. Be sure to install the app well in advance and download the maps for the area you'll be in, so you don't have to rely on a data connection at the rally.

  4. Ah yes - excellent idea - Thanks
  5. And be sure to take a couple of test rides around your house to make sure you really know how the phone works as a gps on the bike. My general experience is that there will be some slightly unexpected surprises.
  6. Give "InRoute" a try. I usually build a route on my PC and email the gpx to myself. When you click on the email attachment just select open with InRoute. Works great, with lots of cool features on that app and its continually being updated.
  7. Vote here for OsmAnd Plus
  8. I'm a big fan of Gaia. Both the app and the website. I can sit in the office bored and build a route, then it appears on my phone in the app.
  9. I'm wanting to do the same thing, but with an my old iPhone 6 that I no longer have a cell plan for. I understand the GPS works independently and need to have the relevant maps downloaded and on the phone. Just wasn't sure how to get .gpx files that I already have, installed on the phone for use or by an app that could use them.

Sounds like these programs you speak of have to have a route built inside the app or on a website, then downloaded to the phone for use. I won't be doing that.

I have Gaia GPS on it but have never really played with it to know what it will and will not do. I guess it's not as simple as connecting the phone to my PC via USB, dragging and dropping .gpx files from my computer into the Gaia app.

  10. I ran Gaia with little luck at the GA Dual Sport Scull Shoals event.
I could get it to show a straight line of the point to point but it did nothing for me on actual routing.
I also had to stop and recenter to get it to do even that ---- it wasn't tracking my movement - not fun on a cold day with gloves and cuffs drawn snug.
I'm old and really don't have the patience to spend time trying to sort out something that works just fine (intuitively with little instruction) in my car (Google Maps) and on my bicycle (Garmin) too.
It seems like these things shouldn't be all that hard to do... but most likely it is just me.

Testing out the Trail-Tech Voyager next Friday 3/12/21 and see how that goes.
    I have my fingers crossed.

  11. Thought I'd give OsmAnd maps a try so downloaded the app to an old iPhone 6 that I don't have a cell plan on.

I'm trying to import .gpx files from my PC and I get this screen. Where do I find the "Copy to OsmAnd Maps" option?

There's a "Import to Documents" below that. What Documents and where? A documents folder on my phone? I don't have a "Documents" folder on the phone.

I've uploaded a test .gpx file to my Google Drive cloud and I've emailed myself the same file. Can't figure out how to access either within the OsmAnd app.

    Thanks for any help.

    Attached Files:

    • OsmAnd app.PNG
  12. This is straight from OsmAnds website Help.
    • To open a GPX file in OsmAnd, just download it and select OsmAnd as an app to open it. That's it: you'll view the file normally in the application.

    • Download it with what? To where? What app, program, device is this done from? This implies that you'd get a selection in the download dialog to choose where to save the file or what app to open it. But how would whatever or wherever you're downloading the file from even know about OsmAnd to give you the option? Unless you're downloading it from within the OsmAnd app itself. I see no way within the app to do that.

    Attached Files:

    • Capture2.JPG
  13. Don't use OsmAnd but generally:

When you click on the file in your email or in google drive on your phone do you see a rectangle with arrow facing up maybe bottom left corner? Click that and the options to message , email, notes should show up. Scroll right until you see the copy to OSM option.

Similar to this just using OsmAnd

  14. That was the problem. I forgot that you can swipe to the left to see more options for what to do with the file. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  15. Had this exact question/problem. The open with answer is within the <Share> option.
  16. I have extensively tested all the above apps and each one has one serious problem or shortcoming.
In the end, I settled on MapOut, which is an absolutely amazing app.
Its not free, but its not expensive. A once-off purchase for life.
By far the very best offline maps (very detailed yet amazingly small file sizes and fast rendering),
Many options to import/export GPX/KML files,
A very practical filing system to keep all your routes, waypoint collections and tours organised,
very easy to follow the line on screen (no turn-by-turn guidance, but that really is not required),
quick and easy to draw new routes, with many ways to make changes or corrections,
recording of tracklog with direct export to Relive and various other apps,
The very best user-manual I have found (PDF in various screen formats).

    See details at www.mapout.app

Try it, you will not be disappointed.

Now if only I could find an Android app that is as useful... any suggestions?

  17. I have been trying to use Locus Map Pro for a few weeks now and yes, its the best of the bunch, but does not come close to the ease of use and functionality of MapOut on IOS.
I wish that MapOut would start working on an Android version.
  18. There is a learning curve, sure, but it is the most powerful GPS app on the market for Android. It will do turn-by-turn for you too if you desire.
